This digital photograph of a Drosophila Santomea under a microscope was taken for research on the evolution of gene regulation in Drosophila. While the researchers were aiming to capture patterns of pigmentation on the hind region of the fly, the most striking feature of this "portrait" are the fly's unnaturally orange glowing eyes. Postmortem, these eyes emit an unexpected energy.
